“Now he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah, according to the command of the Lord to Joshua, namely, Kiriath-arba, Arba being the father of Anak (that is, Hebron). Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the children of Anak. Then he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. And Caleb said, “The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as a wife.” Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it; so he gave him Achsah his daughter as a wife. It came about that when she came to him, she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she alighted from the donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” Then she said, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Judah according to their families.” Joshua 15:13-20 NASB1995
Caleb had believed the Lord. Caleb did not die in the wilderness. Caleb remained alive. Caleb followed the Lord fully. Caleb received Hebron. This was a portion among the sons of Judah.
When we have believed, we do not die but have eternal life. When we have believed, we remain alive in Christ. When we have believed, we follow the Lord fully. What does this mean? The Lord calls us to be perfect. This word in scripture actually means to follow the Lord with our whole heart. It is the idea of “fully”. We won’t get our walk with the Lord “perfect” as in the sense of without fault. However, we can follow Him “fully” as in the sense of following Him with every intent to follow Him perfectly. And what was the reward for believing? Caleb had a portion among the sons of Judah. For us, we are among the sons and daughters of Judah because Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. We receive a portion!
Then Caleb chose to give his daughter as a wife. My prayer is and has always been that my children would enter into a relationship with Jesus so that they could become the bride of Christ. I want them each to have an inheritance in “the land”. I want them each to inherit the “springs of living water” that only Jesus offers.
Caleb gave his daughter to one who would capture Kiriath-sepher. I was fascinated to learn the name of this place is interpreted as “city of the book”. My heart’s desire for my children was that they would marry those who love the word of the Lord, the book, the only book that really matters in life.
If you are in Christ, this is your inheritance.
